What's on a Cannabis Label?

Products can look similar but have very different contents. Always check the label.

Cannabis sold in licensed Maryland dispensaries must meet state packaging and labeling standards and include the following information:*

  1. Product details include product weight, along with harvest, manufacturing, and/or expiration dates. Lot numbers identify specific batches and can be used in product recalls.
  2. Certificate of Analysis (COA) Use the QR code or link to view results from state-required lab tests, including cannabinoid levels and contaminants (e.g., mold, bacteria, heavy metals). Only products that pass testing may be sold.
  3. Cannabinoids include THC (impairing) and CBD (non-impairing), CBN, CBG, and others.
    1. On edibles (gummies, chocolates, drinks): check for milligrams (mg) of THC per serving and per package. Tip: Split a serving in half or smaller to get the amount of THC you want.
    2. On inhalables (flower, pre-rolls, vapes): check for THC percentage. Tip: THCA turns into THC when heated, so add THC + THCA to calculate total THC.
  4. Allergens are listed along with ingredients and nutritional information, if applicable.
  5. Licensee details include grower (GA-) and/or processor (PA-) name and license number. Visit the “Data Dashboard” tab on cannabis.maryland.gov and look under “Licensees” to verify.

  7. Terpenes include compounds like myrcene, pinene, linalool, and limonene. They give cannabis flower its distinct odor and may provide different effects on the mind and body.
